Special Olympics gymnast named Sportsperson of the Year
Gymnastics Victoria would like to congratulate Special Olympics rhythmic gymnast Fiona Taylor of Eastern Gymnastics Club, who was awarded the City of Whitehorse 2014 Sportsperson of the Year.
It was the second year running that Fiona had won the prestigious award, with this year’s award ceremony chaired by Mayor Councillor Ellis.
Lauren Burns, Taekwondo gold medallist from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, was also a special guest on the night and presented the award to Fiona.
“It was an incredible feeling to be presented with the City of Whitehorse Award for the second time, and I can’t believe I got to meet Lauren Burns,” said Fiona.
“Not many people get to hold a real Gold Medal, so to get to hold Lauren’s medal from the Sydney Olympic Games is a moment I will never forget.”
The award caps off an impressive year for Fiona, who recently competed in the 2014 Special Olympics National Games in Rhythmic Gymnastics.
Fiona competed strongly against tough interstate competition and finished in 2nd place across all Apparatus: Ribbon (11.925), Clubs (12.725), Ball (13.563), Hoop (13.138) and All-Around (51.9).
