The Flats Accessible Walk

The Flats is a peaceful walk through a Goulburn River floodplain. The sealed path passes through forest areas where you can enjoy nature and look for wildlife and birds.

Path Access

This walk is suitable for people walking, using wheelchairs, or using other mobility aids.

  • The path is sealed and wide enough for people to travel side by side.
  • There is enough space for wheelchair users to pass and turn around.
  • The path is mostly flat, with a few gentle slopes.
  • Some sections have a slight sideways slope (camber).
  • Small tree root bumps may be present.

The path edges drop to grass, dirt, and occasional drainage areas.

Footbridges cross waterways along the route.

  • Bridges have handrails for safety.
  • Small gaps and bumps may occur where surfaces change.
  • Bollards narrow the path to 1.5 metres in some places.

Path Environment

Forest sections are quiet and shaded by trees.

One section beside the Midland Highway is more exposed and may be affected by traffic noise.

There are no vehicle pick-up or drop-off points along the route. If you want a shorter walk, plan to turn around before reaching the end of the mapped route.

Mobile phone coverage is good throughout the area.

Some signs may be difficult to read or use. Along the walk, you can learn about local history through the Mooroopna Aboriginal History Walk.

At the end of the route, a footbridge crosses the river and connects toward Victoria Park Lake. Access to this section may be difficult due to a short, steep ramp and a raised edge.

Rest Areas

Seating is limited and benches are spaced far apart.

Chinaman’s Garden includes:

  • Rotundas near the river with limited accessibility.
  • A fully accessible War Memorial.

Food and drinks can be found in central Mooroopna, about 1 kilometre away by footpath or car.

Toilets and Drinking Water

The nearest accessible toilets and drinking water are located at:

  • Kidstown Adventure Playground, approximately 150 metres away via the underpass.
  • Water Tower Gardens, approximately 1 kilometre away.

Carrying your own water is recommended.

Dogs and Cyclists

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash.
  • Cyclists may share the path.

Please note that this is a large bushland park, and some people may be camping or sleeping in the area.

Public Transport

  • Bus Route 1 stops near the car park.
  • A sealed footpath and underpass connect to the bus stop on the opposite side of the road.
  • The opposite bus stop includes a shelter with seating.
  • Both bus stops provide passenger information.

Parking

A large car park is located at the start of the walk.

  • There are no marked parking spaces.
  • The surface is sealed, smooth, and firm.
  • The area has a gentle slope.
  • There is room for side and rear vehicle loading.

Parking wheel stops have narrow gaps between them. Wheelchair users may need to travel across a short section of dirt at the end of the car park to reach the path.
