Lake Guyatt is a peaceful place to enjoy walking or wheeling. The lake is home to many waterbirds and is a popular spot for fishing, with species such as bream, perch, and trout. The walk also passes through attractive gardens and includes local history and cultural features.
Path Access
This walk is suitable for people walking, using a wheelchair, or using other mobility aids.
- Maps, direction signs, distance markers, and walking times are provided.
- Paths are wide, smooth, and made from compacted granitic sand.
- There are no steps on the main route.
- The boardwalk across the lake has a non-slip grated surface.
- An alternative route is available if you prefer not to use the boardwalk.
An optional extension to the Powder Magazine includes:
- A narrow path section that is 1.2 metres wide and 20 metres long.
- Slopes and an uneven boardwalk bridge.
- Some people may need assistance on this section.
Path Conditions
The walk is mostly flat.
- Walking clockwise around the lake makes the few slopes easier to manage.
- There is a short, gentle rise from the lake boardwalk to the path above the lake.
- The path on the eastern side of the lake has a strong sideways slope (camber). The upper perimeter path is the more accessible option.
The path is bordered by grass and passes through gardens. Some tree branches extend over the path. Most of the walk is exposed to sun, wind, and rain.
There is enough space for wheelchair users to turn around. Vehicle pick-up and drop-off points are available nearby, although only the south-east corner connects directly to the path. Mobile phone coverage is good.
Rest Areas
The area is well maintained.
- Seating is limited along the walk.
- Accessible toilets and drinking water are available nearby at Lake Guthridge and the Sale Botanical Gardens.
- Carrying your own water is recommended.
Picnic Facilities and Attractions
- Older-style picnic tables are available but require crossing grass.
- Accessible BBQ shelters are located along McIntosh Drive before the car park.
- Front-loading rubbish bins are provided.
- The area includes a bush playground, children’s maze, public art, interpretive signs, and cultural and historical features.
- Food and drink options are available nearby on Raymond Street and York Street.
Dogs and Cyclists
- Dogs must be kept on a leash.
- Cyclists may share some of the paths.
Important Information
The area may be affected by flooding during wet weather.
Parking
The main car park does not have designated accessible parking spaces.
- The parking area is spacious, sealed, smooth, and level.
- The walk starts directly from the car park.
- There are no kerbs or road crossings between the car park and the path.
