Lake Guthridge Accessible Walk

Lake Guthridge is a shallow, man-made lake surrounded by a tree-lined park. It is a popular place for walking, wheeling, accessible boating, fishing, and birdwatching. Visitors can enjoy seeing a variety of native and migratory birds.

Path Access

  • Paths are smooth and made from sealed surfaces or compacted granitic sand.
  • Paths are generally between 2.25 and 2.4 metres wide.
  • There is one narrow section at the Botanic Gardens lakeside gate, which is 1.35 metres wide.
  • Signs and trail markers provide directions, walking times, and distances.

There are no steps on the route. Small bumps may occur where path surfaces change. Gentle slopes are present along Foster Street, with a slight lean toward the lake. Some granitic sand paths also have a slight lean toward the edges.

Tree branches may hang overhead, but no low obstacles were identified during the assessment.

Safety Information

  • Some path edges drop away to grass, dirt, or water.
  • Handrails are only provided in some locations.
  • The presence of a handrail does not always indicate whether there is a drop-off.

There is enough space for wheelchair users to turn around. Vehicle access points around the lake provide convenient pick-up and drop-off options. Mobile phone coverage is good throughout the area.

The northern path runs alongside Foster Street and may be affected by traffic noise.

Cyclists may use some of the paths.

The lake area can flood during wet weather.

Rest Areas

The park is well maintained and offers a range of places to rest.

  • Seating is available around the lake.
  • Some seats have armrests.
  • Picnic tables are provided.
  • Many seating areas are located on grass and may require leaving the path.
  • Tree shade and shelters are available in some locations.
  • Parts of the walk have limited protection from sun, wind, and rain.

Picnic Facilities and Attractions

  • BBQ shelters and picnic tables can accommodate wheelchair users.
  • Front-loading rubbish bins are provided.
  • Accessible viewing platforms are available.
  • A jetty provides access to the local Sailability boating program.
  • Interpretive signs and cultural features can be found along the route.
  • Food and drink options are available nearby on Raymond Street and York Street.

Facilities

  • Drinking fountains are available, but carrying your own water is recommended.
  • Accessible toilets are located at both ends of the lake.

Dogs and Cyclists

  • Dogs should be kept on a leash.
  • Cyclists may share some of the paths.

Parking

There are two accessible parking spaces on McIntosh Drive.

  • The spaces are wide and located opposite each other.
  • The parking area has a slight slope.
  • There are no protected access zones beside the spaces.
  • Rear vehicle loading is from McIntosh Drive.
  • A ramped path connection is located about 5 metres away.
  • The surface is sealed and smooth.
  • There is no marked pedestrian crossing on the drive, so watch for traffic.

Around 20 public parking spaces are also available nearby. Additional parking can be found around the lake.
